In teaching flamenco guitar, I focus on helping the student to develop a practical understanding of flamenco, including solo work and working with singers and dancers.
My teaching method is adopted from the flamenco guitar teachers I studied with in Spain, including Manolo Sanlúcar, José Antonio Rodriguez, Manolo Franco, El Carbonero, and Domingo Rubichi. As with those masters of the guitar, I often teach simply using the "I play it , you play it back" method. For some students, particularly those who have never played guitar, I often start with Juan Martin's El arte flamenco de la guitarra. You will learn falsetas, accompaniment patterns, and concert solos from artists from Sabicas to Vicente Amigo. I am happy to be able to provide opportunites for my students to work one on one and in ensemble with singers and dancers. My partner, Katerina Tomás, teaches flamenco dance and singing. Each year our students join together to perform in concert, presenting solo and ensemble works. |

In teaching classical guitar, I focus on helping the student develop a working repertoire that constantly evolves as the student grows into a professional performing artist. Absolute beginners are taught fundamental guitar technique and musicianship skills including memorization, interpretation, and performance. Students with a background in classical guitar are introduced to repertoire matched to their skill level and are coached in developing secure performances of works from memory as well as sight-reading strategies. Advanced students are taught to assemble an exciting, effective concert repertoire and are coached in professional skills - from finding performance opportunites to recording. My teaching methods grow out of my 30 years of experience as a performer, composer, and teacher. |
